In preparation for a huge national tour, which starts in September, award-winning comedian Lucy Beaumont has started a run of small matinee gigs at Steamworks on Randall Street.

The first of these took place on 22 April (tickets just £10) and was very much as advertised – a work in progress with stories about modern life, half-formed thoughts and observing the extraordinary in the deeply ordinary.

Steamworks has become a regular spot for the Leadmill’s comedy night and this afternoon delight was an almost an informal affair with just over 30 people in attendance. It felt very immersive and Lucy regularly interacted with the audience to garner feedback and even opened up the floor to a bit of a Q&A.

She made it clear from the start that this was material that had yet to see the light of day so honesty was encouraged – there were plenty of willing participants ready to offer opinions.

Lucy covered topics including Uber drivers, therapy, ASDA, dinnerladies and family dynamics with her northern roots very much front and centre (she’s from Hull).

With no two shows expected to be the same, this is a great opportunity to see a comedian in their rawest form. Lucy was engaging, open and, importantly, funny. It will be interesting to see what the ‘paid for’ material is like as she so put it.

Further shows take place on 7, 8, 20, 21 May and tickets can be purchased here.
