Sheffield Cathedral’s 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop is getting ready to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Ever wondered where the ‘1554’ comes from in the name for Sheffield Cathedral’s coffee and gift shop?

The number in question actually comes from the date that Queen Mary Tudor returned land and property to Sheffield which had been seized by the crown.

Since that time, these resources have been held and carefully managed by the Sheffield Church Burgesses Trust. Sheffield Cathedral benefits from significant support from the Trust and the 1554 gallery celebrates the Burgesses and their generous support.

This month the 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop celebrates its tenth anniversary and will be marking the occasion with a special party on 7 June.

Over the last decade the1554 Coffee& Gift Shop has supported the working life of the Cathedral and has proved a big draw in its own right. It also offers a calm environment away from the hubbub of a busy city for both shoppers and workers.

Matt Poorian has been coffee shop supervisor for much of that time and is on first name terms with many of the regular visitors, whom he describes as ‘family’.

“We have a lovely welcoming atmosphere and community feel, which is really popular with our customers,” he said.

The 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop has built long-standing relationships with local suppliers, including Heavenly Coffee and Our Cow Molly and collaborates with Love Sheffield to display and sell their city images.

Over the summer, they will be expanding onto the Cathedral forecourt with a pop-up cart selling drinks and ice creams.
