BOOKS

If you’re anything like me, you’ll have noticed Sheffield’s hospitality scene has really come alive this summer.

After what can often be a challenging start to the year for pubs, bars and restaurants, it’s been brilliant to see beer gardens packed, new venues opening and people making the most of the sunshine. It’s a welcome boost for the hospitality industry and a reminder of just how important it is to support the brilliant independent businesses that make Sheffield so special.

One venue that’s quickly become a summer favourite is Earls Yard. With its spacious outdoor seating, fantastic food and drink offering, and live sport on the big screens, it’s fast establishing itself as a go-to spot for enjoying the sunshine with friends.

Hidden Gem
One venue I’d definitely recommend checking out this summer is The Local on Ecclesall Road. They’ve recently launched a brand-new cocktail menu that takes classic favourites and gives them an Asian-inspired twist. It’s refreshing to see a venue putting its own spin on well-loved drinks, making it well worth a visit if you’re looking to try something a little different while enjoying a fantastic atmosphere.

Worth the Short Trip
If you’re happy to venture just outside Sheffield, The Charleston in Bakewell is well worth adding to your list. Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, it’s an elegant restaurant, cocktail and wine bar, complemented by live jazz and a beautifully restored interior that makes it a destination in its own right. Whether you’re stopping by after a day exploring the Peaks or planning a special evening out, it’s a venue that certainly won’t disappoint.

Drink of the Season
This summer, spritz-style cocktails continue to dominate drinks menus across the city, and it’s easy to see why. Light, refreshing and perfect for warmer days, they’re ideal whether you’re enjoying a relaxed afternoon in a beer garden or catching up with friends on a sunny evening.

If you’re looking to try something a little different, I’d also recommend The Gin Traveller’s Sour, my own signature cocktail created in collaboration with The Local. Inspired by Asian flavours, it’s a refreshing twist on a classic sour and one I’m incredibly proud to see featured on the venue’s cocktail menu.

As we head further into summer, I’m looking forward to discovering more new openings, seasonal menus and hidden gems across Sheffield and beyond. If there’s one thing this city does exceptionally well, it’s hospitality, and there’s never been a better time to get out, try somewhere new and support local.
