Tucked away on Abbeydale Road, The Shop is more than just a gallery. Founded by Nick Grindrod, it has become a vibrant and creative space where artists can exhibit their work and connect with others, whilst sharing their passion with the wider community.

Nick’s passion for art has shaped his career, with inspiration often found in everyday moments and wider global events. For him, the opening of The Shop came as a surprise. Despite Sheffield’s many art galleries, there were none, prior to The Shop, on Abbeydale Road. Nick saw this as the perfect opportunity to bring art to the heart of the community. He said: “I’m really happy to bring something new to the local area, and keep supporting artists, both local, national and international.”

Over the past ten years, Nick has worked alongside several galleries that have showcased his work. These experiences have given him a better understanding of the skills needed to run an art gallery.

Not only has Nick exhibited his work within the UK but has also been fortunate enough to have solo shows in New York, Switzerland, and Singapore. His art has also been displayed in a number of international art fairs such as Art Miami, Art Taipei, Art Koening, and the New York Affordable Art Fair.

According to Nick: “Every show and opportunity is a chance to make new connections, learn more about working collaboratively, and has given me the inspiration to push my practice forward.”

He added: “I’m doing everything slowly, building things up gradually, and working collaboratively with artists whose work that I love.”

One of The Shop’s main purposes is to promote Sheffield artists by exhibiting their work and celebrating the city’s creative talent. Nick aims to hold a monthly exhibition at the gallery, “selecting artists that offer something unique and different” to ensure each show brings something fresh to the gallery.

Nick also hopes to include the work of those he has shown with previously, who are willing to display their work at The Shop. He plans to feature these artists alongside international names, creating exhibitions that celebrate local and global talent.

Despite its recent opening, The Shop has already built an impressive programme that is packed with exciting events. Nick has expressed his excitement about the current show at The Shop, Palpable (9-23 July), which features 11 international artists whose work has never been shown in Sheffield before.

Upcoming shows will continue to offer variety, from a Sheffield-based artist in September to more abstract work and a limited-edition print sale taking place in October and November.

Nick hopes to make Sheffield a more art-centred city, using his connections in the art world to inspire the inventive minds of others. This vision is rooted in the values that have guided his own career. He explains that, “as an artist, throughout my career I’ve always stuck to a few principles- to listen to my gut, always work with integrity, and roll with the punches.”

Nick’s goal is simple: “to put on great quality shows with great quality artists.”
