This summer, the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse hosts a variety of theatre for all, including thought-provoking conversations, community-minded drama, theatre for the very youngest of audiences and more.

Boxed In is a playful and thought-provoking journey about two friends trying to understand life’s strange instructions. Everyone else seems to know the way, but what if you just don’t get it? It’s a story for anyone who’s ever felt a bit confused, a bit left out, or a bit boxed in. A largely non-verbal, playful show for ages 3-6 about (mis)understanding the rules. Playing on Saturday 6 June.

Dash Arts in association with Leeds Playhouse present Our Public House. When an entire community spoils their ballots and refuses to vote, a local pub on the brink of closure becomes the only place left to talk. In a town divided by politics, secrets spill. Songs rise. People fall in love. Something shifts. Inspired by the real words of over 600 people nationwide, Our Public House transforms the state of the nation into a play with original live music, about community, connection and what might change if everyone had their say. Take Flight is a stunning aerial theatre show for 0-2 year olds and their grown-ups, following a musical mother bird as their baby hatches, grows and explores, navigating the challenges of hunger, sleep and play. Culminating in a beautiful aerial moment, this multi-sensory, interactive show ignites the imagination and curiosity of babies. Playing on Monday 22 June.

Presented by Sheffield Theatres and Migration Matters Festival, The Horse of Jenin tells a universal story of resilience and imagination, from Thursday 25 – Friday 26 June. Written and performed by Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada, this solo show combines storytelling, mask and stand-up comedy to explore the everyday life of a boy growing up in Jenin in Occupied Palestine who, like every child in the world, just wants to play and have fun. With a powerful mix of imagination and comedy, Shehada builds from the fragments of his memories and his hopes for the future. In Evening Conversations, a middle-class, middle-aged, multicultural mother of millennial sons invites her boys to ‘crack open a cold one’ and share their views on life. Will her mixed heritage (Hindu/Indian and Muslim/Pakistani), fiercely British, mono-lingual sons see their background as a place of strength or an unwelcome inheritance? Acclaimed actor-writer Sudha Bhuchar brings her warm-hearted, humorous and truthful storytelling show to Sheffield on Saturday 27 June.

Buckle up for a frank, fast-paced dramedy Invisible, by Totally Visible Theatre Company, celebrating the fascinations and pitfalls of friendship, family and contemporary life for older women. Afrank, fast-paced comedy drama dealing with how older women are perceived in society, the relationships they forge and most importantly their ‘invisibility’. With warmth and laugh out loud humour, the play explores sisterhood, motherhood and the effects of upbringing, as well as navigating modern life as an older woman. Playing on Wednesday 1 July.
Award-winning Canadian playwright and novelist Anosh Irani’s darkly funny, deeply human solo-show Buffoon tells the story of love, loss and the magic of clowning. Born to circus folk preferring trapezing over parenting, Felix grows up alone. Surviving extraordinary encounters and heart-breaking experiences, the clown – the Buffoon – is born. Now Felix is stepping into the spotlight to perform his unique but universal life-story; searching for family, self and love. From Thursday 16 – Saturday 18 July.

The Trip, by Janys Chambers, is co-created and performed by members of the age 12-17 Sheffield Theatres Youth Theatre. Find out what really happens when a group of young people go on a school trip to the seaside. First of all, they need to get the bus in time. Even then, what a bunch of kids from Sheffield will make of donkey rides, the amusements and seagulls the size of dogs is genuinely anyone’s guess.
