BOOKS

In the heart of Retford, Nottinghamshire, Limited 2 Art has become far more than a traditional gallery. It is a destination — a place where art lovers travel from far and wide to discover an inspiring and diverse collection of original artworks, limited editions and sculptures.

Founded in 2004, Limited 2 Art has enjoyed an extraordinary journey. The gallery spent 16 successful years in Bawtry before relocating to Retford, where it has now been established for six years. The past two years have marked an especially exciting chapter, with owners Ruth and Wayne Stone purchasing their current building — securing what Ruth fondly describes as the gallery’s ‘forever home’.

Today, Limited 2 Art proudly stands as the largest independent art gallery of its kind in the UK. Spanning two spacious floors at 22-24 Bridgegate, the gallery offers a carefully curated blend of contemporary and traditional art, welcoming both seasoned collectors and those discovering art for the first time.

At the helm is Ruth Stone, whose warmth, vision and passion for creativity have shaped Limited 2 Art into the vibrant hub it is today.

“I’ve always believed art should be enjoyed and lived with,” says Ruth. “It doesn’t need to feel intimidating. We want people to feel inspired the moment they walk through the door.”

That ethos is felt throughout the gallery.

A truly diverse collection

Visitors to Limited 2 Art can explore an impressive range of original paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics, alongside fine art limited-edition prints, striking sculptures, hand-blown glass from Borowski Glass — a family-owned company in Poland — and beautifully hand-carved ceramics from Uruguay.

The gallery represents artists at every level: local, national and internationally recognised.

Local talent is proudly championed, including Julian Bray from Newstead, Rosie Smith from Tickhill, Lucy McKie ROI from South Yorkshire, Andy Taylor (originally from Retford, now based in Nottingham), and woodturner Colin Tweed from Worksop.

Nationally recognised names include Mackenzie Thorpe, Kerry Darlington, Gary Walton and Edge Sculpture — with Limited 2 Art now regarded as a leading stockist of Matt Buckley’s much-loved sculptural works.

The gallery also showcases international artists and brands such as Bob Dylan, De Rosa Ceramics and Malaras Glass, bringing a truly global dimension to its collection.

One of the most exciting recent additions to the portfolio is Zalini, renowned for his vibrant originals created using his unique injected squiggle art technique — a process that took seven years to perfect. His work has quickly become a show-stopper in the gallery, drawing admiration from visitors and collectors alike.

Artist events and landmark moments

Limited 2 Art regularly hosts exhibitions and personal appearances, offering visitors the chance to meet artists and experience new collections first-hand.

On Saturday 16 May, nationally recognised artist Leigh Lambert from Newcastle will be making a special appearance at the gallery. This follows a highly successful show in 2024, where Leigh debuted two Retford sketches – Kings Park and Cannon Square – both of which proved extremely popular. For this upcoming visit, Leigh will unveil a third local landmark: Retford Town Hall, continuing his much-loved series celebrating the town.

These events form part of the gallery’s wider commitment to creating immersive experiences, turning visits into memorable occasions rather than simple transactions.

Bespoke framing and personal service

Another defining feature of Limited 2 Art is its bespoke in-house framing service, led by Ruth’s husband Wayne. Known for his craftsmanship and attention to detail, Wayne creates tailor-made frames designed to complement and protect each artwork, using premium materials including ArtGlass UV protection.

Together, Ruth and Wayne have built a reputation not only for exceptional art, but also for outstanding customer care. Friendly advice, personalised consultations and 0% interest-free finance ensure that art remains accessible to all.

Rooted in community, reaching nationwide

While firmly rooted in Retford, Limited 2 Art now attracts visitors from across the UK. Many travel specifically to experience the gallery’s breadth of artwork and its welcoming atmosphere — a testament to its growing reputation as a true destination gallery.

Deeply involved in the local community, Ruth continues to champion regional artists, collaborate with nearby businesses and share the gallery’s story through exhibitions, events and social media. This blend of professionalism and genuine warmth has earned Limited 2 Art multiple accolades and a fiercely loyal customer base.

More than a gallery

At its heart, Limited 2 Art is about connection — between people and art, artists and collectors, creativity and everyday life.

Whether discovering a bold contemporary piece, a tranquil landscape, a playful sculpture or a handcrafted glass creation, visitors are invited to explore at their own pace and find something that resonates.

After more than two decades in business, Limited 2 Art continues to evolve — guided by passion, driven by creativity, and grounded in community.

As Ruth puts it simply: “We don’t just sell art — we help people fall in love with it.”
