This May, Cast welcomes Phoenix Dance Theatre with Interplay, a striking new mixed bill that brings together some of the most exciting voices in contemporary dance today. Blending duet and ensemble work, Interplay places collaboration at its heart – exploring how different perspectives, styles and stories can collide to create something truly compelling on stage.

Marcus Jarrell Willis, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, said: “I’ve always found it intriguing to observe dual artistic expression – the ways two creative minds come together and collaboratively work towards one goal in creation, while maintaining their individual artistic expressions. The programme consists of different forms of artistic duality, through choreographic voices, as well as the structure of the dance works themselves.”

The programme features Next of Kin, a reimagined duet by Marcus Jarrell Willis exploring the humour and tension between two kindred spirits, alongside Ed Myhill’s Why Are People Clapping?!, a playful and precise work set to Steve Reich’s iconic Clapping Music. In Small Talk, choreographers Travis Knight and James Pett present a quietly powerful portrait of a relationship fading over time, while Suite Release, a new collaboration between Yusha-Marie Sorzano and Willis, draws on ritual, meditation and the roots of hip-hop and house to celebrate movement as a shared, joyful experience.

James Blakey, Director at Cast, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Phoenix Dance Theatre back to Cast with Interplay. This is a company renowned for pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance, and this programme offers something for everyone – whether you’re a long-time dance fan or experiencing it for the first time.”

Bringing together a diverse range of choreographic styles and influences, Interplay offers audiences a chance to experience contemporary dance that is both thought-provoking and accessible. Each piece stands alone, while contributing to a wider conversation about connection, contrast and shared experience.

The event takes place in Cast’s Main Space at 7.30pm on Wednesday 20 May 2026, tickets are from £17.50 and can be purchased from the Cast box office by calling 01302 303959 or online.
