Legally Blonde is one of many classic films to make the jump to theatre and arrived at the Lyceum for a short run. Others gracing the same stage in coming months include Heathers The Musical (20-24 October) and Mean Girls (9-14 November).

The 2001 film, starring Reese Witherspoon, was a huge success and seems ready-made for the musical – and this stage version doesn’t disappoint, adding another dimension to the already familiar storyline.

Elle Woods, played brilliantly by Amber Davies, is the Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen who enrols in Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner (Jamie Chatterton).

It’s a story about overcoming stereotypes but is one that doesn’t take itself too seriously – and has lots of fun along the way.

The set, designed by Colin Richmond, really embraces the ‘pink aesthetic’ after starting off with much more subdued tones, which is echoed in Tom Rogers’ outfits. Kitsch is definitely the name of the game.

While Amber takes the lead, the supporting cast, including real-life dogs Sprout and Milo (as Bruiser Woods and Rufus), all play their part. George Crawford added further depth to the character of Emmett – Elle’s new love interest – and there are also stand-out performances from Karen Mavundukure as Paulette, Hannah Lowther as Margot and Adam Cooper as Callahan.

The Greek Chorus – Elle’s Delta Nu sorority sisters – provide plenty of love and laughs but it’s Elle’s bond with Paulette that really shines, giving the audience both comic relief and emotional depth.

Musically, it’s very high-energy and very much in-keeping with the aesthetic. ‘Omigod You Guys’ and ‘Bend and Snap’ are the songs everyone will remember whilst ‘There! Right There!’ was both upbeat and hilarious. The title track had a much more serious, vulnerable tone, echoing the main character – there’s definitely more to her than meets the eye.

Much has been said about the show’s length but we felt it skipped along at a good pace.

Legally Blonde The Musical is fun, frivolous and leaves you feeling good – what more could you want from a night at the theatre?
