Banner Cross, or should that be Banner Croissant? The stretch from Greystones Road up to the junction with Psalter Lane is now filled with coffee shops, bakeries and more – all great places to stop off for a coffee and a treat, especially if you’re walking up that lung-burning hill. 

Here’s where we think you should stop off if you’re in need of caffeine and sugar. 

Bean Blvd

One of the newest additions to this part of Ecclesall Road, Bean Blvd is perhaps known for its Montreal-style bagels and creamy Basque cheesecakes. Open seven days a week 8.30am-4pm, you’ll be covered for breakfast, brunch, lunch and even an afternoon snack.

DELI by Forge Bakehouse

This small but perfectly formed location joins existing shops and cafes in Abbeydale, Beauchief, Lodge Moor, Dronfield and Sheffield Station. Seating is sparse, but takeaways are abundant so you can take away your favourite breads, pastries, coffees and more.

Marmadukes – The Sorting Office

This truly unique building houses a 60-seater cafe space on the ground floor, along with a sourdough bakery and expanded pastry kitchen. Eggs feature heavily on a menu littered with more substantial favourites such as fish finger sandwiches, salads and tarts. It’s licensed too so you can sip something a little stronger alongside your flat white. 

The Persian Bakery

Known for its authentic Persian products, customers rave about the freshly baked breads, particularly the Sangak and Barbari varieties. If you’re craving something different, this is the place to go.

Gilmours Coffee Shop

Just off Ecclesall Road at the bottom of Greystones Road is Gilmours is known for its excellent coffee, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere. It serves Forge Coffee and locally sourced cakes.

The Deli at Greystones

Heading a touch further up Greystones Road, opens seven days a week – 8.30am-3.30pm Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm Saturday and 9am to 2pm on Sunday and serves breakfast, brunch and lunch as well as a full range of hot and cold drinks, all of which can be eaten in or taken away.

Bruno Espresso Bar

Ok, so it’s not strictly Banner Cross (it’s more Silver Hill) but it’s worth heading a little bit further up the hill to experience this true Italian gem. Their own blend of Roastology is the star but is the freshly-made focaccia, pastries, cakes and friendly atmosphere. Open Monday to Saturday 9am-4pm.
