Walk into Clothes the Loop, one of the newest independents to set up shop in Leah’s Yard, and you’ll quickly realise that it is no ordinary preloved store. Rails of designer pieces, some vintage, some contemporary, sit side by side with carefully sourced accessories and handbags. For Hellen, founder and lifelong treasure hunter, this shop is more than just a business. It’s the culmination of years of collecting: a carefully curated space where preloved could be celebrated, not sidelined.

A Curated Treasure Trove

The stock at Clothes the Loop ranges from established luxury houses to lesser-known designers. Every piece is preloved, sourced with a keen eye, and often rescued from places where it might otherwise have been destined for landfill. Items are cleaned, repaired, and steamed before they reach the shop floor, with many coming with personalised care instructions to ensure the longevity of each piece.

Clothes the Loop champions the luxury of high-end brands and experiences without the pretension of stepping into a potentially intimidating environment and without the transactional nature of most everyday shopping experiences. The shop is intentionally designed for customers to browse at their own pace, chat about and learn about the designers, and try things on in thoughtfully designed changing rooms. Buying second-hand can sometimes feel like a rush. You find something, and you cling to it because you’re scared someone else will snap it up, but Hellen wants to flip that experience by inviting customers to take their time, bring friends along for the experience, and really consider whether a piece is right for them.

Fashion That Lasts

At the core of Clothes the Loop is a firm belief in sustainability and mindful consumption. The shop aims to challenge the culture of disposable fashion. Overconsumption is one of fashion’s biggest problems, but Clothes the Loop aims to slow it down. It’s not about buying lots of cheap T-shirts—it’s about finding pieces that you’ll love and style in multiple ways for years, whilst using our preexisting wardrobes as bases for restyling and experimentation, curating fashion that feels authentic to each individual customer. Emphasis on individuality is key. Fast fashion pushes people towards uniformity, with everyone wearing the same high-street trends. Clothes the Loop is about encouraging people to mix it up, experiment, and find their own voice through what they wear. Secondhand doesn’t mean compromise, but an opportunity to build a unique, sustainable style.

While some of the shop’s designer labels come with higher price tags, Hellen is clear that Clothes the Loop isn’t only for those with deep pockets with not everything reaching top-end price tags with dresses from £15, making the second-hand experience accessible to most budgets. The point is that there’s something for everyone: quality pieces that wash well, wear well, and can become staples in your wardrobe. It’s fashion on a budget, but without the throwaway mindset.

Changing the Conversation Around Fashion

Hellen is also keen to highlight the role small businesses like hers play in challenging disposable fashion. “We can make changes quickly,” she says. Responding to new designers, new trends, and new conversations almost overnight is something that bigger businesses can’t pivot to in the same way and with the same creative independence. 

Furthermore, high-profile campaigns like Second Hand September, originally started by Oxfam in 2019, have helped bring preloved fashion into the spotlight, but Hellen hopes people will carry the ethos year-round, arguing If you can shop secondhand in September, why not keep doing it? “You find things you won’t see anywhere else, and that’s exciting.” Her own journey into preloved fashion is filled with moments of discovery. One of her most memorable finds was a Hermès silk scarf unearthed in a charity shop still in its original box: a brand and a piece she thought would be previously inaccessible to her right at her fingertips!

Rooted in Sheffield’s Heritage

The shop’s home at Leah’s Yard feels particularly symbolic for Hellen, who has a family connection to the historic site. Her great-great-grandma had a buffing shop in Leah’s Yard, so to now be running her own business in the same complex, feels like a real full circle moment. This connection to Sheffield’s heritage of makers and craftspeople is something Hellen hopes Clothes the Loop can carry forward. Sheffield is known to be a city of makers, and Clothes the Loop is very much in that spirit. From creativity and experimenting with individual style, to making do and mending these values have always been part of this city’s DNA.

Leah’s Yard itself, once a derelict cluster of workshops, has been transformed into a destination for creative independents. For Hellen, it’s the perfect environment. It’s calm, away from the hustle of the high street, but buzzing with creativity, with customers often coming in and commenting on how beautiful the space is. 

Looking Ahead

So what’s next for Clothes the Loop? Hellen has big plans. She hopes to expand the styling side of the business, sourcing pieces for specific clients and events, and to collaborate with charities and other independents across Sheffield. And then there’s the dream of putting Sheffield firmly on the fashion map. London Fashion Week ignored Sheffield, instead staging events in Leeds and Manchester, but she believes that the Steel City deserves recognition. “I’d love to see a Sheffield Fashion Week, one that celebrates sustainable and preloved fashion. The potential for collaboration here is enormous.”

The message is loud and clear: every time someone chooses preloved, it’s a small step towards change. At the end of the day, it’s about slowing down, making thoughtful choices, and finding joy in clothes that already exist. We end our chat joking about how Rome wasn’t built in a day, but with so many ideas, they had to start somewhere. For now, however, Clothes the Loop is carving out its own space: part boutique, part community hub, and part movement. If the growing interest in preloved fashion is anything to go by, Hellen’s vision is right on time.
