Mike Tucks name is etched into Sheffield Sharks history after an impressive 13-year career in the BBL, finishing with his retirement in 2022. The Canadian power forward spent his early years playing in Europe in countries such as France and Luxemburg, before moving to Sheffield. Born and raised in Toronto, his British mother meant moving over was achievable, so Sheffield became his new home in December 2009. 

Over the years, Tuck became known not only for his leadership but also his calm presence, community involvement and consistent performances. Across his time with the Sharks, he only missed 13 games, 7 of which were down to him leading England at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

We spoke to Mike and he shared insights into his rise to success at the Sharks. When asked why he stayed in Sheffield, the Canadian forward told us his first years at the team were what made it for him. He said he was ā€˜chasing silverware and adrenaline’, and the sharks delivered. Tuck expressed Sheffield was a ā€˜city that everyone called a village’, and ā€˜Sheffield is home’, reassuring us of his intent to stay put.  

The forward discussed his role within the Sharks, describing himself as Head of marketing for both the sharks and hatters. His career, deservedly successful, was filled with significant moments. ā€˜The 2016 play-off final is what stands out to me’ He shared. During this game, Tuck won an MVP and yet another piece of silverware, a testament to his excellence and importance within the team. We asked Tuck what advice stuck with him, ā€˜stay consistent’ he responded, ā€˜work hard’. 

After a remarkable playing career, he hasn’t moved far from the court. Following his retirement, Tuck secured a position as a Sky Sports Broadcaster, commentating on every Sharks game this season. When asked about this involvement, he replied, ’It just came about’, ā€˜I was very lucky’. Not only does he work with the team and Sky Sports, he also coaches at the University of Sheffield, leading the UoS men’s team in the Northern 1A league. There is no denying he is a true legend in Sheffield’s basketball scene.

Tuck told us British basketball has ā€˜exploded’ in the last three to four years, with more and more younger children taking it up and being eager to play. He shared he had been playing basketball since he was around 9 years old and it had been a passion for him ever since. 

In terms of Sheffield, Mike described the PCA arena as the new ā€˜home of basketball’. With the Sharks and Hatters both basing there, the arena seats around 2,500 people for each game, showing the increase in demand to watch basketball. The Park Community Arena is the Uks first Carbon Neutral arena. After opening in 2023, the arena not only hosts basketball, but also is home to the Dronfield Netball Club.  

Although his time on the court may be over, his impact on the sport continues. He still plays an active role in the sport and the community around it. It’s clear he hasn’t lost any of the passion that brought him over here back in 2009! As the sport continues to grow his influence follows, a true Sheffield Sharks legend.
