Renowned for its Rock n Roll roots, Sheffield has an undeniably great musical history – one that keeps growing, adapting, diversifying – and still it never toots its own horn. And its musical presence can only be improved with an even better place to enjoy it. With a mixture of live gigs and DJs, these venues retain the offbeat and organic feel that Sheffield does so well. Definitely not ones to miss, whether you fancy a boogie or something more relaxed – these are where to be.

Sidney and Matilda

This multi-faceted venue is situated in the abandoned industrial district of Sheffield, the bones of the building enrich the experience. A courtyard, a warehouse with a dance floor beside the bar and a basement room below, Sidney and Matilda spoil for choice in a neat steel packaging. With a friendly atmosphere, Sidney and Matilda host anything from big names to local scenes and seek out the unconventional. They deserve recognition for the underground feel they bring to Sheffield and their effort to promote unique sounds to wider audiences.

Dorothy Pax

This smaller space has a great deal to offer, Dorothy Pax is situated on the Victoria Quay, right next to canal.  Under the arch, they hold brilliant evenings with jazz collectives, blues bands and a variety of independent artists both local and touring. Alongside the music, they have an excellent selection of cask and keg amongst much more. Winter or Summer, Dorothy Pax is always inviting. A warm and rustic space that is unbeatable for a night of live music. 

Haggler’s Corner

A hidden gem of Sheffield, placed in Lowfield, Haggler’s Corner accommodating 14 independent businesses: Food and Drink, Hair Salon, Vintage Shopping, Tattoos, Flowers, to name a few. Through a tunnelling arch, you are greeted by a wacky courtyard that sits beneath a vibrant mezzanine. Haggler’s Corner has an antiquated and outlandish touch that gives it a unique yet familiar feel. Every weekend they throw disco and funk infused parties alongside regular gigs from Sheffield-bred talent. If you looking for a fun and lively night – Haggler’s Corner is calling.

Cafe #9

A cosy café nestled in Nether Edge that blends coffee and community which undertakes a magnificent transformation in the evenings. Housing class-acts from far and wide, Cafe #9 offers a friendly feel and brilliant live-acoustic music. Priding itself on the intimacy of its performances, Cafe #9 makes the little things feel grand. There isn’t a genre you won’t find there, from folk or country, to jazz, blues, swing, there is something for everyone.

The Leadmill

The longest standing venue in Sheffield, building its eminence since 1980, The Leadmill isn’t one to be missed. In many ways the beating heart of music here in Sheffield – its an accommodating venue that hasn’t lost its edgy roots. The creative hub that it has become, alongside their frequent club nights, they host an array of live gigs amongst much more. Retaining the edge they began with, housing nights of alt and indie rock to RnB acts such a Jorja Smith.

Yellow Arch Studios

A little across the way, in Neepsend, sits Yellow Arch Studios, right under our noses. A rustic space, regenerated from a Victorian Factory providing a unique blend of musical production and performance since 1997. A community orientated space, that seeks to foster new musical talent and most famously known as the birthplace of Arctic Monkeys. With multiple rooms and an inviting wooden bar, a large courtyard with seating, Yellow Arch Studios can deliver a get together with friends or an early hours rave – the choice is yours.

Hallamshire Hotel

The retro returns, bringing a fresh face to West Street – The Hallamshire Hotel are serving up a disco themed dance floor and the revamping of the top floor into a live performance area. Sparkles and orange hues – this music hall and late night bar is alive almost every evening. 

The Washington Pub

With a hypnotic feel, decorated with watchful eyes and other punky trimmings, The Washington is a music staple of Sheffield. Just down the road from Division Street, attracting locals and lost students –  The Washington always whisk up a good time. Intimate gigs and regular DJs – The Washington refuses to fall in line, they care little for expectation and all for the niche.

The Porter Cottage

Down on Sharrow Vale, Porter Cottage is a venue on the smaller scale with a welcoming feel. Every Wednesday they run a Blues Jam hosted by Steve Delaney and friends, accompanied by a open-mic. Every week offers something new, with happy surprises from every corner of music. The guarantee of the night is a hearty jam from Steve Delaney to bring a spirited evening to a close.
